 3d Holographic Plasticine Space Chess

"G A R R O ! R"

God... SPELLING!

s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g!

And even if there was an apostrophe in youre - it wouldn't be THER'E!

Art Notes

The comic shorthand for expletives is odd - but I like it! Do any of you comic buffs out there know if this was common back in 1978? I suspect I might have bought a Fightin' Marines comic (Publ. Charlton) that used this visual code: stars, swirls, hammers etc. Bonkers.

Film Notes

dajarik star wars chess

Available to buy. Oh my God - they probably have International tournaments (I'm afraid to Google that)

Did you love this scene when you were a kid? The game itself looks very 1960's Ray Harryhousen-esque now but it doesn't matter. You know, in a modern film it'd be fairly convincing CGI, not Claymation; it'd probably go on a bit longer - because lets face it. it's a lot easier these days; it'd be all very dramatic with loads of camera angles and cutting back and forth between the game and the players...

And it'd be boring.

Do you know why I think we liked this scene so much? Not because of the effects or the game concept but because of the script and the performances. The 'arm-ripping' banter between Han and Threepio, the idea that Chewbacca might have a darker more dangerous side, and all topped off with Chewie reclining and brushing his paws back over his hair with great satisfaction. A bit like Luke does in Empire after he and his sister have a big long satisfying wet kiss.

What do you think readers?

Yes - I was enthralled by the holo-chess.
Enthralled enough that I bought a set a couple of years back - it's lovely.
Always fancied making a stop-mo fan film about the pieces...

Was it the set pictured above?

Someone has to have made a coolness comparison before, but I always think of Spock's Chess set, when I think of this chess set. Spock might have had a more challenging game, but you have to love the set that says “I'm not going to capture your piece; I'm going to kill it!”

Can't say I ever read Fightin' Marines John, but that swearing looks a bit Asterix to me, were you a fan?

Maybe you're right Dan! A friend of mine had an Asterix book around that time - 1981 - and I would have borrowed it. Actually as far as I recall it was all in French so those would have been the only intelligible speech bubbles!

That's great, well spotted.

Now I had to go and look up the Star Wars Chess Rules (as well as the Star Trek ones) I'm going to have to build both boards someday, and play them.
- Maybe I'll build the Star Trek board and use a Star Wars Chess set for pieces just to see if anyone gets bent out of shape about it.
- The Star Trek rules seem complex but fun.
- As for the Star Wars Rules there are 2 games I found both are simple and look fun (I requires dice, or a computer).
