Tractor Beam (13)

And I only just blow-dried my hair...

Another 1978 page. But the top panel is deceptive, because Han's been retrospectively doctored - maybe 2 or 3 years on. And a lovely haired Luke has been added.

It's odd. If I wasn't happy with the artwork, why didn't I just replace it? Plenty of the other pages got dumped (though some were mercifully intercepted and saved by mum and dad). Was there still something about it that I liked?. The bottom panel certainly is action packed with its aerial gymnastics.

Han and Luke's hair defies the Tractor Beam!

Left Short haired publicity still. Taken before or after production? Right A casual non-blow-dried look.

Left Dorky middle parting, but still retaining the beloved '70s lorry-driver look.
Right A surprisingly younger look - many years later in 'Empire'. Bye bye 70s, bye bye serial killer side-burns.

Very much of their time! Luke's been added to the background of the top panel and only a few stray hairs are starting to lift at the front despite that tractor beam. Thank goodness for Rebellion Super-Hold Spray.

"Ancient weapons, hokey religions and Tractor Beams are no match for a good hairdryer at your side kid."

(More words to live by)

You can see that I liked that blow-dried-back style of the late seventies. If you can't remember it, try to picture David Cassidy in the woeful Partridge family, and his famous-by-default brother Shaun - I think it was - in The Hardy Boys mysteries. I quite liked the latter series, being young and stupid; especially the scary ones.

In the film - to be fair - Ford's hair doesn't really get the blow-dried look (above: bottom-left) until the final throne room scene. Ah, so that's why he looks embarrassed!

However, I believe we still owe a huge debt of gratitude to the wise hairstylist on Star Wars: the uncredited Patricia McDermott. I mean, it could have been so much worse!

As always, thanks for reading and keep the comments coming :)

I feel like the bottom panel could really use a 180 degree flip! Quite the chiseled looks on Han there! Love his statement of the obvious!

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he says it again :-*

Which hairstyle's your favourite Casey?

I'd have to say probably the one from Empire. That or the throne room :)

Yeah, the Empire one was great. And not '80s looking either. He could have ended up like Patrick Swayzee in 'North and South': floppy mullet. More mercifully good hairdressing!

I have to say that Carrie looked really nerdy - even plain, in Empire. Bad choice.

Luke's got more and more boring too. I suppose it was because he was becoming more monk-like.

Hmmmm... "George Lucas Note to Self: Jedi are Boring, must not make 3 movies entirely centred on them."

LOL! And yes, Luke completely got more boring! You're right too, I'd never thought about it but Carrie was very plain in Empire. Huh.

Amazing change in her looks - was it just the hair, personal problems?

In Jedi she was ravishing again (I don't mean the overrated bikini scenes). She a was a wee bit skinny though in the final scenes. I suppose she'd lost her puppy-fat :-)

Ha - I know. Hopeless.

My only regret is that it wasn't even worse - and hence, funnier.
